14 years ago, i met this man (CP) and we've been together ever since. Along the way we've picked up a few things: a mortgage, kids, a sensible car, weight...

All things considered it still feels like yesterday and my life very much resembles the things dreams are made of.

it went beyond sharing good times and sadness.

it went beyond sharing love and passions.

what they shared was Life in its truest sense

-the opening and the flow

and the becoming more of who they are.

These words are on our bedroom door- a gift i gave CP in 2004. They rang true then and ring true now.

And, for that i am deeply humbled and forever grateful.

My youngest is certifiable. But then, so am i. And, well nobody's perfect, just ask my homie (whom i've never met), Adele. See, told ya - that apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Despite yesterday being Monday it had me at 73 degrees. A welcome change from the usual brrrrrrr....all day - i loved saying, "Man, it's hot!" Today, not so much. Instead, rainy, grey and pleh. Still my youngest found reason to laugh, play and dance. Gotta love young people. So free and uninhibited.

The sound of his laughter stopped me in my tracks, the sight prompted me to get my camera, and the final result snapped me out of my mood.

I had a totally different blog planned for today but then life got real - earlier this week while riding to work, just days after his 42nd bday, the love of my life was hit by a car. And, while he is okay. The incident landed him in the ER, with a high radial shoulder fracture and me with a little help from Grey's Anatomy, this is where i landed:

Life is the most fragile, unstable, unpredictable thing there is.

In fact, there’s only one thing in life we can be sure of.

It ain’t over till its over.

Life is indeed the most fragile, unstable and unpredictable experience there is. There are no signs forecasting the arrival of change. It just shows up. And we're tasked to feel our way through, to meet it and its effects with some sort of gusto, style - verve.

Met CP. He's the love of my life and

one of the most honest, generous

in ways large and small, acts random or orchestrated,

kind, thoughtful, loving

CP: "i still consider it my du-ty....pause...(wait for it, wait for it)......
to pleeeease the boo-ty.

As long as i can remember i've been tasked to give. First, by my mother throughout various phases of my childhood and then by myself - once the habit morphed into a belief the urging of my mother were no longer necessary. Being the brilliant human being she was, it was made clear that time was just as important as money and emphasized the importance of giving both.

The founder of Healthy Babies Project, Delores L. Farr,

when she started this organization she did so because she believed that going into neighborhoods and homes and offering prenatal services to expectant women

and their families could reverse and even eliminate the senseless loss of life in our nation’s capital.

Her aim was to reduce the dangerously high rates of infant mortality

and to be a bridge to building stronger family units by involving fathers in raising their children.

See that lady in red there on the right? Regine Elie, she's the Executive Director and the reason i'm associated with the organization.

She is such a ray of sunshine who not only allows you to talk, she listens and depending on what she's heard might share a smile or shed a tear with you.

Day-in-day-out they show up to provide a much needed service because

Rooting DC 20011: A Field of Dreams

Rooting DC, which offered a variety of interactive workshops on everything from schoolyard and youth gardening to gardening basics, concluded their 4th annual free urban gardening forum this past weekend.

Before i get ahead of myself - when i say Rooting DC what/who i really mean is the dynamic duo: Bea Trickett and Katie Rehwaldt.

Every year for the past 4 years these 2 (and countless volunteers) work exhaustively to pull off what is quickly becoming an invaluable DC resource.

Whether being the liaison that brought Rooting DC to Coolidge High School,

or, 'the coffee whisperer', as one volunteer was deemed - she kept everyone properly caffeinated throughout the daylong event,

it seemed the volunteers felt a sense of pride at what was being accomplished and responded accordingly.

The opening speaker set the tone for the day delivering a speech that intelligently connected links between local community gardening, national nutritional education and global food distribution. Talk about galvanizing.....zing!

Speakers donated their time,

presented resources,

exchanged ideas - some were even interviewed.

Juliette G. Tahar, vegetarian chef extraordinaire, was one of my favorite of the day. The connection she made between food and it's vitality was thought-provoking, her demonstration cooking class super informative and well, the finished product was positively inspiring. Yum! It is because of her i now have a vegetable drawer full of bok choy, mustards greens and kale and, know how to cut and cook them.

A little something for everyone -

community members, experts, students,

professionals, businesses came together.

Rooting DC provided a field where dreams were shared, idea planted and in some cases (such as mine) roots developed - you should have seen me in the grocery store - Ms. Tahar would have been sooooo proud. As should you ladies - job well done!

Footloose and fancy free for a long weekend + a couple of days of fun in the West coast sun. That was me in what now seems like a lifetime ago as all vestige of footloose and fancy freedom fade.....re-entry has been THAT rough....okay!

While flying into LAX i snapped the first shot; the 2nd shoot a couple of days later on Sunset Blvd.

Why?

It dawned on me. Whether coming to LA for the first time or a seasoned veteran hanging out on Sunset Blvd chances are a dream brought you here. If you've got a dream - get on out there and share it.

Of course i had to ask, "How long have you been together?" 7 years.

Hm. Interesting parallel...

CP and i were together for 7 years before we decided to go to the next level. Part of me couldn't believe that i'd met my soulmatch so young - I was 23. And, since neither of us were in a rush to arrive anywhere quickly. We took our time, traveling, learning and loving each other.

Well, turns out 13 years ago i had indeed met my soulmatch and apparently 7 years ago so had she.

Lately, I find myself confronted with a reoccurring idea/theme. Whether it is with myself, my children, friends, or with complete strangers while standing waiting in line - this idea/theme works its way into the conversation one way or another.

"How does it happen? What is it? Who deserves it? Why some and not others?" It's clear that success is subjective and not a simple as 1+1=2.

Which is why i when i randomly encountered the words written on the back of a teenager's sweatshirt the elusive pieces to this complicated puzzle slid into place.

All the greats did it to become great. Do it to stay great. And, will tell anyone who's listening who wants to be great: Practice. Practice. Practice.

Why?

The Year of Change & Completion

The older i get the more I love traditions.

I was introduced to this little gem of a tradition about a decade ago by friend of mine, J.

Every year a group of his friends individually think of a theme for the year, they then collective vote on the best theme and voila - a theme is born.

To give you an idea of what i'm talking about. Last year's theme for myself was - "Stay Zen in 2010." The year before was, " Getting fit and fine in 2009" and the year before was ...well, you get the idea.

The last week of the last year (2010) and the first week of this year (2011) i was away on travel. While gone i saw and experienced some awe-inspiring things.

So naturally, while theme thinking i was moved towards:

"A little slice of heaven in 20011".

But, after a inspiring conversation with my friend, Dyembe, it changed.

This time last year i decided to start blogging. All-in-all, i would say it was good idea.

I've spent the better part of last year developing my voice and vision for this blog. It's a lot harder than ya think.... trust.

Let your dominant intent be to feel good which means be playful, have fun, laugh often, look for reasons to appreciate and practice the art of appreciation. And as you practice it, the Universe, who has been watching you practice, will give you constant opportunities to express it.

As a longtime procrastinator (don't know how i got through college) i'm determined to break my love for later. Yes, i know that it doesn't really exist but i depend on 'later' a lot. As in, " I'll do it later." Days, weeks, months go by and get lost in the land of later...

With a new year comes a call for a new attitude and so now is my new. Couple that internal call with a chat i had with my son's school psychologist, and well this blog was born.

Every year, for the past fifteen years, we all get together the weekend before Thanksgiving to celebrate, fellowship and give thanks. This year was no different.

We traveled from Philly, DC and Queens (he-he-he)...

In seeking out the unknown pieces of my life story that would hopefully bring me peace, here i stand just 1 day after having a truly unique experience that would both overwhelm and underwhelm me at the same time - I met my father for the first time in my adult life.

In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take,

the relationships we were to scared to have,

and the decisions we waited to long to make.

There comes a time in your life when you realize who matters,

who doesn't,

who never did

I make no bones about the fact that i am who i am because of how i am loved and supported by my partner. It hurts my heart to see other women experience the same frustrations and growing pains that naturally come with motherhood/parenthood with little-to-no support. It's why i immediately understood her post:

"Why does watching "16 & Pregnant" makes me cry???"

I understood the sentiment immediately and as a result - this blog was born.

It's not without irony that I'm a photographer...

In fact, my mother is the one who gave me my first camera. I started out shooting with film, reluctantly switched to digital and haven't looked back since.

Today is my mother's birthday - she would have been 60 years young...

It's not without irony that I'm a photographer. ..

Not one picture do i have of my mother with my children. Not one. When I'm at a shoot i often find myself capturing images i would want my mother to have with my kids...it's why i enjoy capturing my clients hands.

It is not without irony that i am a photographer. ..

During the ceremony the bride, an avid performer and musician, sang 'Lovely Day'. I was completely unprepared for the simple emotion expressed. No one present stood a chance, by the time she was finished, there wasn't a dry eye for miles...
